Dream Con Highlights Black Trailblazers Changing the Game in Sports

Blog

From game-winning plays to major broadcast moments, some trailblazers are redefining what representation looks like in sports. This Black History Month, we’re spotlighting people who are making moves on the field and the sidelines.

Maia Chaka

Maia Chaka is an NFL official and career educator who is known for shattering one of the most visible glass ceilings in professional football. In 2021, she became the first Black woman named to the NFL’s roster of game officials, marking a major milestone in the league’s history.

Before reaching the NFL, Chaka officiated in Conference USA and the PAC-12 Conference. She was also selected for the NFL’s Officiating Development Program, which positioned her to be among the league’s top collegiate talent.

Beyond the field, Chaka founded the nonprofit foundation Make Meaningful Change and created the G.E.M.S. (Girls with Empowering Minds and Spirits) club, initiatives focused on youth leadership and academic achievement. Through mentorship and advocacy, she continues to expand opportunities for young women in sports and beyond.

Did you know? Chaka was actually dared into officiating while at Norfolk State University: a challenge she took on that ultimately led to her NFL career.

Jamaal Williams

Jamaal Williams is an NFL running back currently with the New Orleans Saints. Previously, he was Brigham Young University’s all-time leading rusher before being drafted to the Green Bay Packers in 2017, followed by a trade to the Detroit Lions in 2021. During his tenure with the Lions, Williams broke their single-season rushing touchdown record with 17 in 2023, passing up Barry Sanders’s previous record of 16 in 1991.

In and outside of football, Williams proudly embraces anime and gaming culture, earning the nickname “Swag Kazekage.” His personality has made him a fan favorite, including viral moments tied to his love of Naruto and Pokémon

Through community initiatives and youth outreach, Williams uses sports and shared interests to connect with young fans and encourage them to embrace who they are.

Did you know? Williams has incorporated anime references into his NFL player introductions!

Pam Oliver

Pam Oliver is known as one of the most respected voices in sports broadcasting. Her career in sports media began early, working for local news stations like KHOU in Houston to larger networks such as ESPN, before she moved on to FOX Sports. There, she had a historic, nearly three-decade run, holding the record of being the longest-tenured sideline reporter in the NFL, with over 500 games under her belt. Oliver has also covered multiple NFL playoffs and Super Bowls, in addition to the NFC Championships, the NBA and college sports.

In 2025, Oliver was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in recognition of her impact on the industry. She has also been honored by the NABJ Hall of Fame and the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, in addition to several recognitions with the Gracie Award, Mary Garber Pioneer Award, and more.

When she’s not in front of the camera, Oliver mentors aspiring journalists and frequently supports initiatives at her alma mater, Florida A&M University, continuing to shape the next generation of journalists and sports media professionals.

Did you know? As a child, Oliver practiced delivering news reports in the mirror with a hairbrush as her microphone, inspired by legendary broadcaster Walter Cronkite.
