This Women’s History Month, we’re spotlighting women dominating the sports industry with their impressive talent and drive!
Aerial Powers is a professional basketball player and WNBA Champion (2019) who has made great strides with teams such as the Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx. Her renown also extends overseas; in her early career, she received a gold medal at the World University Games in Seoul, South Korea (2015). Currently, Powers is a Guard for the Atlanta Dream (#23), and she continues to advocate for women in sports and eSports.
Off the court, Powers is also a Co-Owner, Streamer, and Brand and Diversity Ambassador for the eSports organization Team Liquid, playing video games ranging from NBA 2K to Valorant. Her extensive work in this area led to the formation of Powerz Up, an international all-women 2K tourney that she created to elevate women at the intersection of sports and video games.
Angela “Overkill” Hill is a respected mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter with a background in Muay Thai. She is currently an active competitor in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s strawweight division, with multiple wins under her belt, in addition to securing an Invicta FC strawweight championship (2016).
Hill has made history throughout her notable MMA career – in 2014, she became the first Black American woman to sign with the UFC and headline a UFC event. Later, she became the first woman in UFC history to participate in four fights in two separate years. With these achievements, Hill has successfully paved the way for future Black female athletes to pursue a career in a traditionally male-dominated arena.
Bianca Belair is an accomplished professional wrestler and WWE Superstar known for her exceptional athleticism and significant achievements. She has racked up a series of major accomplishments. Besides coming on top for the 2021 Women’s Royal Rumble Match, she has secured wins for the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship (2021) and the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship (2024). Belair has also held the record for the longest Raw Women’s Championship reign in the title’s history (2022-2023) since 2016.
As a prominent Black woman in WWE, Belair serves as a role model for aspiring female fighters, proving that they can achieve the same level of success as their male counterparts in a physically dominant field.
