Dream Con Features Black Women in Art & Animation for 2025

Blog

At Dream Con, we celebrate the incredible contributions of Black women in anime, gaming, and entertainment. This Women’s History Month, we’re shining a light on some of the most talented Black women making waves in art and animation. From horror manga to blockbuster animation, these creatives are shaping the industry.

Gigi Murakami

Gigi Murakami is an independent horror mangaka and illustrator known for her bold, thought-provoking art that blends horror, surrealism, and social commentary. Inspired by classic horror manga and African diasporic experiences, she creates hauntingly beautiful works that challenge the genre’s boundaries.

Murakami’s latest graphic novel, Resenter, has gained recognition for its unique storytelling and eerie aesthetic. Her graphic novel is now published on Viz Media. She has also collaborated with indie publishers and horror festivals to showcase her work.

Murakami often draws inspiration from urban legends and African folklore, merging them with traditional Japanese horror themes.

Karen Rupert Toliver

Karen Rupert Toliver is a powerhouse in the animation industry, currently serving as the Executive Vice President of Creative at Sony Pictures Animation. She played a key role in bringing diverse stories to life, most notably as a producer for the Oscar-winning short film Hair Love.

Toliver continues to push for representation in animation, overseeing projects that center on diverse voices and stories. She has also been instrumental in developing animated films that highlight Black culture and storytelling.

Before Hair Love, Toliver worked on beloved animated films like Meet the Robinsons and Rio.

Tahj “Queen Tahj” Williams

Queen Tahj is a multidisciplinary artist whose vibrant, culturally rich work has been featured in major media and sports events. She gained national attention for designing the official logo and theme for Super Bowl LIX, making history with her distinctive artistic vision.

In addition to her Super Bowl project, Queen Tahj has worked with major brands and organizations, blending sports, fashion, and Black culture into her designs.

She incorporates Afrofuturism into her artwork, drawing inspiration from history, mythology, and contemporary culture.

These Black women are leading the way in art and animation, inspiring future generations to break boundaries and dream big.
